In Part One, we introduced our new Hartford 450 engine and explained why we chose a new long-term engine supplier for our 450 motorcycles.
In this second installment, we’re taking you behind the scenes: from Co-founder and CEO Richard Worsham’s visit to Hartford’s headquarters in Taiwan to dyno testing, ECU calibrations, EPA compliance, and what this partnership means for current and future Janus owners.

Calibrating the Hartford 450 for the Halcyon
Transitioning to a new engine supplier involves far more than simply installing a different engine. Hartford’s engineering team needed a complete Janus Halcyon 450 so they could develop an ECU calibration specific to our intake, exhaust, and overall motorcycle characteristics while meeting United States EPA emissions requirements.
After a long series of communications, we decided it was worth setting up an in-person visit to their facility and shipping a complete motorcycle to Taiwan for calibration and testing with the Hartford engine. By the time Richard visited Hartford in the fall of 2024, their engineering team had already spent months developing and refining the calibration around our motorcycle.
Visiting Hartford Industrial in Taiwan
After riding the Hartford-powered prototype back-to-back with their production motorcycle, the biggest takeaway was this: it still felt like a Janus. And that was the goal.
To support the transition to the new 450 platform, Hartford required a complete Halcyon 450 to calibrate the ECU specifically for Janus’ intake, exhaust, and overall characteristics while ensuring compliance with U.S. EPA emissions standards. Following months of engineering collaboration, a prototype motorcycle was shipped to Taiwan, where Hartford’s engineering team refined the calibration and prepared the platform for production.
A visit to Hartford’s headquarters in Taichung provided an opportunity to tour the manufacturing facility, observe dyno testing, and evaluate the motorcycle both on the road and in controlled testing. Beyond the engineering and production floors, the factory’s top-floor museum houses founder Chen-Chih’s personal collection of motorcycles, automobiles, and historic manufacturing equipment. The collection reflects the company’s origins, not simply as a manufacturer, but as a business built by enthusiasts with a genuine passion for motorcycles. That appreciation for riding remains evident throughout Hartford today.

Hartford’s UK-spec production 450 was evaluated back-to-back with the Janus Halcyon 450 on a quiet stretch of road along Taiwan’s western coast. The comparison confirmed smooth fueling, predictable power delivery, and well-matched gearing. Most importantly, the motorcycle retained the character that defines the Janus 450: lightweight, approachable, and engaging to ride.
EPA Compliance and Real-World Testing
Although the Hartford engine is an evolution of our previous 450 platform, it was still required to complete a new EPA certification process. We are pleased to begin delivery of Hartford 450 EPA compliant motors on all new orders moving forward. We have spent the last 6 months going through the EPA certification process, and during that time, we have installed Hartford engines in test bikes to accumulate miles and validate updated fuel system components. We are thrilled to announce the new engine supplier and begin delivering 450s equipped with the new engine in the coming months. Our focus now turns to completing the additional testing required for California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification, with California deliveries expected in 2027.

Why Hartford is More Than an Engine Supplier
For Janus, the decision to partner with Hartford was ultimately about more than specifications on a spreadsheet. We were looking for a company with real manufacturing capability, a long-term outlook, reliable communication and engineering support, and people we could trust. Hartford remains a family business in many respects today, and our primary contact is Mr. Chen’s granddaughter. Over the course of our work together, she and her team have been knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely invested in helping us succeed. In an industry where suppliers can often feel distant and transactional, that relationship is invaluable. Hartford’s history, its manufacturing culture, and the people behind the company convinced us that they are not merely an engine supplier, but a long-term partner in the future of Janus Motorcycles.

What mattered most was that the Hartford engine did not require us to abandon the principles that guided the development of the 450 in the first place. It remains a simple, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine. It remains approachable to service and easy to live with. It simply delivers those qualities while allowing us to build the future of the 450 platform with a partner in Taiwan whose manufacturing culture, long-term outlook, and close relationship with Western markets give us greater confidence in the stability and continuity of the platform for many years to come.

What Changes for Existing Janus 450 Owners?
Existing 450 owners can be confident that the core character of the motorcycle remains unchanged. For future owners, the Hartford partnership gives us greater control over lead time, greater confidence in long-term supply, and a stronger foundation for continued development of the 450 line. Most importantly, it allows us to continue building the kind of motorcycles we have always wanted to build: simple, lightweight machines designed not around complexity, but around the experience of riding.
This partnership represents more than a new supplier. It represents our commitment to building motorcycles that remain serviceable, enjoyable, and relevant for decades to come. It has always been about finding the right balance between simplicity, capability, and the experience of rambling. The story of the Janus Motorcycles has never been about chasing the latest technology or the highest specifications. We believe this next chapter preserves that balance while giving the platform a stronger foundation for the future, and we look forward to continuing the ramble with all of you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the new engine change how the Janus 450 rides?
Our goal was to preserve the character of the Janus 450. Riders can expect the same lightweight, approachable experience with refined fueling and dependable performance.
Why did Janus visit Hartford in Taiwan?
Our engineering team worked directly with Hartford’s engineers to calibrate the ECU, validate performance, and prepare the motorcycle for EPA certification.
Will current Janus 450 owners be affected?
Current owners can continue enjoying their motorcycles with confidence. The Hartford partnership primarily strengthens future production, long-term supply stability, and continued platform development.
Can I retrofit the new Hartford engine into my existing SWM-powered Janus motorcycle?
No. While we have worked hard over the years to make upgrades and retrofits across model generations, the Hartford 450 model was engineered as a completely new platform. From the engine mounting points and chassis integration, to the electrical and fuel delivery systems, the supporting components differ significantly from the previous platform making a retrofit impractical.
